One of the most common questions I get from expecting Mamas before their maternity session is, “What should I wear?”

If you’re planning a studio maternity session in Kansas City, the good news is that studio sessions give you full control- gorgeous natural light, timeless styling, and zero stress about weather.

I guide my clients towards two main styles that photograph beautifully in the studio: casual and effortless, or elevated and dressy. Or we can do both. Below, I will walk you through both-including colors, fabrics, and styling tips-so you feel confident and comfortable walking into your session.

Style One: Casual Studio Maternity Outfits (Neutral + Color Pops)

What works best for casual studio maternity photos:

  • Fitted tops that show the bump (ribbed tanks, bodysuits, sheer tops with accent pieces like pearls or glitter, lace bralettes)
  • Jeans or trousers that sit comfortably under the bump. You can go for a more intimate look and wear nude underwear
  • Soft layers (open button- down, cardigan, light jackets such as denim or fringe)
  • Barefoot or simple shoes

Best colors for casual looks:

Neutrals (timeless and flattering):

  • Cream
  • Beige
  • Warm white
  • Light taupe
  • Rust
  • Camel

Fun color pops (for personality):

  • Sage green
  • Soft terracotta
  • Dusty blue
  • Muted mustard
  • Blush or rose
  • Jewel tone

In studio, color pops photograph best when paired with neutral bottoms or layers. This keeps the focus on your belly and expression- not the outfit.

Style Two: Dressy Studio Maternity Outfits (Elevated and Timeless)

Dressy looks that photograph beautifully:

  • Flowy maternity gowns
  • Fitted dresses with stretch
  • Two-piece dresses
  • Sleeveless silhouettes
  • Long lines and simple shapes

Best colors for dressy studio sessions:

  • Soft creams
  • Mocha
  • Muted Olive
  • Ivory
  • Blush
  • Warm browns
  • Black (yes- in studio it can look stunning)

Simple dresses with movement photograph best. Stick to textures like lace or knitted fabrics.

What I Recommend Avoiding:

  • Loud logos or text
  • Neon colors
  • Busy patterns
  • Stiff fabrics that do not stretch
  • Matching head- to – toe outfits with family

All of my maternity clients receive styling guidance before their session, including access to my beautifully curated client closet that provides neutral staples and color options. I provide women sizes xs to x-large.

If you’re looking for a stress- free maternity experience where you don’t have to guess what will photograph well, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels both elevated and natural.
